Each year, urban heatwaves in Europe intensify, creating a temperature difference with surrounding rural areas. This is known as the urban heat island effect.
The LIFE Tree Check project invited stakeholders, experts, and citizens in 8 cities in Central Europe to address this challenge together. The app provided map-based data on greenery and trees, inviting users to discover how these spaces could contribute to cooling on hot days and to care for and actively support the cooling of city trees.
This data also fed the design of new public spaces that could adapt to climate change, by predicting each tree’s potential cooling impact and its monetary value over 3, 5, and 20 years.
