LIFE Peat Restore

Reducing of CO2 emissions by restoring degraded peatlands in Northern European Lowland

LIFE Peat Restore focused on restoring peatlands to sequester carbon and contribute to the EU’s climate goals. Working across 11 sites in 5 countries, Poland, Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania and Germany, the project restored more than five thousand hectares of peatland. The team sought to reverse the negative climate impact of peatland draining, turning the habitats into a vast area of carbon storage instead of a source of greenhouse gases. Project outcomes included filling ditches and building dams to stop water draining, creating guidelines for peatland restoration, and enhancing the quality and quantity of data relating to peatlands.
